Also do you know what is the Escobaria in the attached photograph? I saw it in the hills just to the south of Shafter in the Chinati Mountains. Other Escobarias at this site were Escobaria tuberculosa and Escobaria dasyacantha. Each head was about 2cm across. The photograph was taken in mid April 2009.

According to spines it is probably Escobaria tuberculosa (subsp. tuberculosa or varicolor). For the final conclusion it is necessary to know its flowers, fruits and seeds.
Just for the comparision I am including the photos of E. tuberculosa and E. dasyacantha.
Escobaria tuberculosa
Escobaria dasyacantha (syn. E. dasyphrisa)
Escobaria dasyacantha SB 907
Escobaria tuberculosa (syn. E. durispina)
Escobaria dasyacantha

I think that this plant can be identified as varicolor.Translation by Jan Mynar
