The current era, with its new perspectives and research opportunities, as well as the need to publish and cite sources for funding purposes, is leading to constant changes and reclassifications of plant taxa. In the Cactaceae family, these changes are most visible to cactus enthusiasts like us. Given the number of sources, I admit that I am unable to keep track of all the new changes. However, I recently noticed that Plants of the World Online, a website of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, has reorganized the genus Acharagma once again. Currently, as of December 26, 2025, the genus consists of only three species:
Acharagma (N.P.Taylor) Zimmerman ex Glass, in Guía Identif. Cact. Amenazadas México 1: Ac/aq (1998 publ. 1997).
Acharagma aguirreanum (Glass & R.A.Foster) Glass, in Guía Identif. Cact. Amenazadas México 1: Ac/aq (1998 publ. 1997).
Acharagma galeanense (Haugg) Lodé, in Cact.-Avent. Int. 2017(1): 33 (2017)
synonym: Acharagma roseanum subsp. galeanense (Haugg) D.R.Hunt, 2002.
Acharagma roseanum (Boed.) E.F.Anderson, in Cact. Succ. J. (Los Angeles) 71: 323 (1999).
synonym: Acharagma huasteca Elhart, 2011.
I was greatly surprised by the inclusion of A. huasteca as a synonym of A. roseanum. While I am not a botanist, considering the morphological characteristics, such as overall appearance, spines, and flowers, these taxa are very different. I would not be surprised by its inclusion among the synonyms of A. aguirreanum, but classifying it under A. roseanum seems incorrect. As a layman, I would venture to say that this combination is incorrect.
I would like to ask, on what basis was the taxon A. huasteca included among the synonyms of A. roseanum?
