A paper by Breslin, Wojciechowski and Majure with the conclusions of molecular phylogenetic analyses of the Mammilloid clade was published in the journal Taxon in 2021. This work included, among other things, the publication of the combination of the species Ortegocactus macdougallii into the genus Cochemiea.
