Is Escobaria spec. Cedros, Zacatecas Esc. lloydii
or Esc. zilziana?

Ich kann eigentlich nichts konstruktives zu den Sachverhalt beisteuern, aber Bild 2 von Hans Havel kam mir
beim Betrachten sehr bekannt vor. Diese Escobaria habe ich auch in meiner Sammlung. So dachte ich jedenfalls.
Vor Ort im Gewächshaus mußte ich dann feststellen, dass meine Pflanze eine Escobaria alversonii LZ 494
ist. Ich finde, die Pflanzen sehen sich zumindest jetzt als junge Pflanze zum Verwechseln ähnlich. Entweder
ist die Bezeichnung meiner Pflanze nicht korrekt, oder die Arten ähneln sich sehr in der Jugend. Escobaria
zilziana und Escobaria alversonii sind ja doch deutlich unterschiedlich.

Esc. zilziana finden Sie fast überall. Im mindesten habe ich auf Nordmexiko gesehen (auch in Graben
der Straße entlang nach Parras und weiter nach Quatrocienegas und ringsumher auf den Hügeln).

In diesem Gebiet ist mehrere Vegetationgemeinschaften. Wir haben von dorther einige interesente Funde. Leider ich bin
in der Öffentlichkeit zu stillbleiben versprochen. Bei Anton Hofer habe ich ein Foto von der Pflanze aus Sierra Zuloaga
gesehen. Ich meine, dass diese Pflanze in Esc. zilziana - Komplex gehört. Sie sind "linder" als die Pflanzen
aus Sierra Parras. Beide Gebiete sind mit der Geologie und Vegetation einander nahe.

8. Escobaria lloydii N.L.Britton et J.N.Rose sp. nov.
Plant growing in clumps and resembling a small species of Echinocereus; old plants bearing
naked corky tubercles; radial spines about 20, spreading, slender, white; central spines several, stout,
with black or with brownish tips, 2 cm. long; flowers greenish with a central stripe on outside,
2.5 cm. long; filaments, style, and stigma-lobes green; fruit red, globose to short-oblong, 6 to 12
mm. long; seeds black, pitted, globose, 1 mm. in diameter.
Collected by F. E. Lloyd in foothills of Sierra Zuluaga, Zacatecas, Mexico, March 29,
1908 (No. 5).
This species is near Escobaria tuberculosa, but it has much stouter central spines and
greenish white, eciliate inner perianth-segments.
Many years ago a friend of mine used to be near the village Cedros at the foot of Sierra Zuluaga, Zacatecas.
He took snaps of various plants. In this remote valley which ground is lying 2000 m above sea level he found
next cacti (except Opuntias):
Coryphantha spec.
Echinocereus enneacanthus
Echionocereus pectinatus
Escobaria spec.- either Esc. lloydii or Esc. zilziana
Ferocactus hamatacanthus
Glandulicactus uncinatus var. wrightii
Lophophora williamsii
Neolloydia conoidea
Mammillaria pottsii
Escobaria spec. was especially interesting for me.

I had the opportunity to obtain some seedlings of this Escobaria spec. and to observe
the flower and fruit.

I haven´t found any differentions from taxon, which is cultivating here as Escobaria zilziana.
Now there are more possibilities:
1. There are two plants in this locality - above mentioned Escobaria zilziana (Böd.) Backebg. and lost
and now uknown Escobaria lloydii Br. et R.
2. Or there is only one above mentioned plant Escobaria lloydii Br. et R. (1923) which was described
later as Coryphantha zilziana Böd. (1930).
The herbarium sheet NY 385791 (New York Botanical Garden) unfortunately doesn´t help us too (for example see CD 1).
In the case that the second possibility will be verified by the field research, the name Escobaria zilziana
(Böd.) Backebg. would be considered as the synonym of Escobaria lloydii Br. et R.
If anybody has known this region in more details and collected Escobarias near Cedros, please, let me know
the experience with them
