The original description (1923)

Escobaria N. L. Britton et J. N. Rose, The Cactaceae 4, p.53, 1923

Globose or cylindric, usually cespitose cacti, never milky; tubercles grooved above, persisting as knobs at the base of old plants after the spines have fallen; spines both central and radial, never hooked; flowers small, regular, appearing from top of plant at bottom of groove of young tubercles; stamens and style included; fruit red, naked (or with one scale), indehiscent, globular to oblong, crowned by the withering perianth; seeds brown to black; aril basal or subventral, oval.

The two species of this genus known to Schumann were placed by him in the subgenus Coryphantha of Mammillaria; they are like the Coryphanthae in having grooved flower-bearing tubercles, but are otherwise different, especially in the flowers, fruit, and seeds.

Eight species are known from northern Mexico and southern Texas.

The genus commemorates the work of two distinguished Mexicans, the Escobar brothers, Rómulo and Numa, of Mexico City and Juárez.

Type species: Escobaria tuberculosa   (Engelmann) Britton et Rose
(syn: Mammillaria tuberculosa   Engelmann)
(Mammillaria strobiliformis   Scheer)

The others descriptions of the genus

Escobaria N. L. Britton et J. N. Rose emend. F. Buxbaum
F.Buxbam, Die Phylogenie der nordamerikanischen Echinocacteen, Österreichische botanische Zeitschrift 88, 1951

Diagnóza: Malé, kulovité či krátce sloupovitě rostoucí rostliny, o báze odnožující a s vodnatou šťávou. Semena jsou tmavě hnědá až černá, polokulovitá či trochu protažená, testa jamkovitá s relativně malým bazálním či subbazálním hilem a těsně přisedlým mikropylárním otvorem. Obsahují značně veliký perisperm.

Type species:

Escobaria tuberculosa   Engelmann

Escobaria N. L. Britton et J. N. Rose emend. Curt Backeberg
Curt Backeberg, Die Cactaceae 5, 1961

Diagnóza: Malé, většinou silně odnožující rostliny, zprvu kulovitě, pak více či méně protáhlé až válcovitě rostoucí, obvykle hustě otrněné. Brázda po celé délce bradavky. Bradavky krátké, četné a vždy vzpřímené. Květy jsou malé, vyrůstají z temene a mají brvité vnější či vnitřní okvětní lístky. Plody jsou téměř vždy červené, semena s malým bazálním či subbazálním hilem.

Type species:

Escobaria tuberculosa   Engelmann

Escobaria N. L. Britton et J. N. Rose emend. V. John et J. Riha
Václav John a Jan Říha, Rozčlenění rodu Escobaria, Kaktusy 17, 1981

The compilation of the descriptions of John et Říha and Taylor.

D.R.Hunt, N.P.Taylor, G.Charles, The New Cactus Lexicon, DH Books, p. 112, 2006

Description: Habit low-growing, simple or clustering, depressed-globose to cylindric, tuberculate; areoles elongate, extending via a groove from the tubercle-apex to its axil; spines present; areolar glands absent; flowers arising at upper (adaxial) edge of areola and thus between the tubercles; pericarpel nacked; hypanthium short; outher tepals ciliate-margined; fruit berry-like, ovoid, shortly clavate or cylindric, naked or with one or more small scales near apex, green, pink or red; seeds broadly oval to almost circular, 1-2.15 mm, brown or black-brown, matt, usually deep pitted (par-concave), only slightly so in sect Pleurantha.

Closly related to Mammillaria, but considered to be less highly evolved, with the areole not developing discrete spiniferous and flowering portions, and the flowers arising mostly near the stem-apex. Details of the stigma-lobes, fruits and seeds are essential for accurate identification. Some US authors, including Benson and Zimmerman (ined.) combine the genus with Coryphantha, which similary has grooved tubercles, but this overlooks more specialized features of the two genera and produces therotecal difficulties in the classification of the groupe as a whole. The species referable to Escobaria are divisible into 3 sections as follows:

[1] sect. Escobaria - flowers apical; stigma pink, violet or nearly white; seeds brown, testa deeply pitted.

[2] sect. Neobesseya (Britton et Rose) Taylor - flowers apical; outer tepals ciliate; stigma green or yellow-green; seeds black-brown, testa deeply pitted.

[3] sect. Pleurantha Taylor - flowers lateral or from shoulder (not apical); outer tepals ciliate; stigma white or cream; seeds brown, testa shallowly pitted.

Etymology: For the Mexican brothers Romulo and Numa Escobar.

Distribution: Canada, Cuba, Mexico, USA

Type species: Escobaria tuberculosa   (Engelm.) Britton et Rose

The descriptions of the genera, which to the genus Escobaria were included

Genus Neobesseya

Neobesseya N. L. Britton et J. N. Rose, The Cactaceae, 1923

Simple or tufted cacti, globose or somewhat depressed; tubercles irregular or somewhat spiraled, most of them grooved on upper side; flowers borne near top of plant, large, yellow or pink, probably always day-blooming; fruit globose, bright red, indehiscent; seeds black, globose, pitted, with a prominent white aril.

Four species are recognized, all from the Great Plains of the United States.
The generic name commemorates Dr. Charles Edwin Bessey (1845-1915), professor in the University of Nebraska and for many years one of our eminent botanical teachers.
The genus is nearest Coryphantha, but it has very different fruit and seeds.

Type species: Neobesseya missouriensis   (Sweet) Britton et Rose

At present is the genus Neobesseya included as the section to the genus Escobaria.
